How much do you know about the Hindustan Times? Do you know who introduced this Indian English-language daily newspaper? Mahatma Gandhi introduced Hindustan Times in 1924. It played a vital role in the Indian Independence Movement as a nationalist. Now Shobhana Bhartia owns this newspaper. The KK Birla has control over this newspaper. Hindustan Times has a circulation of 993,645 copies according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations in November 2017. Hindustan Times is the second most widely read English newspaper in India after The Times of India. And it is one of the largest newspapers in India according to the circulation of the newspaper.

History of Hindustan Times:

Let’s know about the Hindustan Times in the beginning. In 1924 Sunder Singh Lyallpuri founded Hindustan Times. He was the Managing Chairman and Chief Patron of this newspaper. S Mangal Singh Gill and S. Chanchal Singh were in the charge of the newspaper. Madan Mohan Malaviya and Tara Singh were the Managing Committee members of this newspaper.

Prem Shankar Jha wrote the official history of Hindustan Times in 1999. According to him in the early days, the funding for the newspaper came from Sikhs in Canada. Then financial troubles started. Then Madan Mohan Malaviya bought the Hindustan Times by the help of Lala Lajpat Rai. Lala Lajpat Rai helped him for getting a loan of Rs. 40,000 to finance the paper. K.M Panikkar became the editor in 1928. Gandhiji chose him as a news editor of the paper. But the paper was facing financial trouble again at that time. Then G. D. Birla provided some expenses and undertook the Newspaper’s ownership.

Mahatma Gandhi performed the opening ceremony 26 September 1924. Gandhiji’s son Devdas Gandhi was appointed as the editor. The first issue contained some writings and articles from C. F. Andrews and Cattamanchi Ramalinga Reddy and was published from Naya Bazar, Delhi. The Hindustan Times worked as a serious nationalist newspaper at that time.
